Sales tax

The right sales tax on every order, worked out at checkout.

Tell AjVik the states where you are registered to collect. At checkout it works out the sales tax from the ship-to address and the product, shows it to the shopper and saves it on the order. You or your accountant file and pay it to the state.

Tax

Sales tax handled on every order

By ship-to address

Tax is calculated from where the order is going, so a shopper in another state sees the right amount before they pay.

Only where you collect

Add the states where you hold a sales tax permit. Orders shipping elsewhere are not charged tax you have no right to collect.

Product tax categories

Mark products as taxable or exempt, so items your states treat differently are taxed correctly.

City and county rates Early access

Turn on Stripe Tax to add local rates on top of state rates. Stripe Tax is a separate Stripe product with its own fee.

Tax-exempt customers Coming soon

Record a resale or exemption certificate on a business customer so their orders skip sales tax.

Filing reports by state Coming soon

Tax collected grouped by state and period, laid out the way state returns ask for it.

Getting tax right

Tax fixed at the time of sale, never recalculated later.

Sales tax is worked out at checkout and saved on the order. If a rate changes next month, last month’s orders keep the tax the shopper actually paid.

  • Calculated from the shipping address, state by state
  • Charged only in states where you have added a permit
  • Shipping charges taxed according to your settings
  • Refunds reverse the tax on the refunded items
  • If tax cannot be worked out, checkout pauses instead of charging zero
Knowing where you owe

A heads-up before you cross a threshold.

Many states require out-of-state sellers to collect once their sales into that state pass a threshold, often $100,000 a year. AjVik tracks your sales against a threshold you set and warns you when you get close.

  • Sales tracked against the threshold you enter
  • A warning at 80%, because registering takes time
  • Mark a state as registered once you have your permit
  • Per-state threshold tracking is on the roadmap

Filing time

Numbers your accountant can work from.

Every order carries its tax, ship-to state and totals. Export them for each period, or give your accountant their own login with access to reports only.

  • Orders with tax and ship-to state, exportable for any date range
  • Refunds and their tax reversals listed for the period
  • Accountant role with reports and invoices only
  • State-by-state filing reports are coming soon
  • Accounting sync with tools like QuickBooks and Xero is on the roadmap

Does AjVik file or pay my sales tax?

No. AjVik calculates sales tax at checkout, collects it with the payment and keeps the figures on every order. You, or your accountant, register with each state, file the returns and pay the tax.

Which states do I need to collect in?

Usually the state where you have a physical presence, plus any state where your sales pass its economic nexus threshold. The rules differ by state, so check with your accountant or the state’s revenue department. This page is not tax advice.

What about sales on Amazon, Etsy or eBay?

In most states, large marketplaces collect and pay sales tax on orders placed through them, under marketplace facilitator rules. AjVik calculates tax only on orders from your own store and channels you sell on directly.

Can I sell to tax-exempt customers?

Recording exemption certificates on customer accounts is coming soon. Until then, you can create a manual order without tax for a verified exempt buyer and keep their certificate on file.

Can I connect QuickBooks or Xero?

Not yet. Accounting sync is on the roadmap. Until then, you can export orders, tax and reports as files for your accountant.
